Title

"Student Assaulted In Pauley: Alleged Racial Slur Generates Violence"- May 4, 1990, page 1, The Occidental

Description

This article depicts an on-campus physical encounter that involved Oxy students. The assault resulted from an alleged racial slur that was directed towards an African-American female student from a Caucasian male student. The African-American student told her younger brother of the incident and he, along with a friend, went to confront the Caucasian student in his dorm room. The confrontation turned physical when the Caucasian student denied the accusations. School officials were unsure of how to discipline the male students.

Analysis/Reflection

This document is important, because it shows how the race issue at Occidental had escalated so much that it resulted in a physical altercation between students. Also, the fact that administrators were unsure of what mode of discipline would be taken to regulate the situation says that they realize that both parties were wrong in their behavior.
