Title

"Area Studies," Occidental College Catalog, 1982-1982, page 23

Description

This page of the College Catalog defines the purpose of Area Studies: "[foreign area study] challenges students to immerse themselves in an unfamiliar culture, which becomes a focus to refer discovery of relevant generalizations of humanist knowledge. This kind of study provides two important satisfactions: (1) students find it exciting simply to acquire an understanding of human experiences for which they do not have an intuitive sensitivity, and (2) students are challenged by the opportunity to confront the conceptual framework of historical, cultural, and political study within the context of concrete data, which by its sheer volume and by its remoteness from their expereince stretches their minds."
