Title

"A Letter to Dean Danelski from Wellington Chan," June 17, 1985, Richard C. Gilman President's Files

Description

This letter outlines a meeting between the Affirmative Action Committee and "several minority faculty members who have only joined the college during the last two years." It states that "[Occidental College's] minority faculty members have been spending considerable time counseling minority students," identifying "three particular items" from their "wideranging discussion" to "communicate to [the Dean] as recommendations for prompt action: 1) that the College provides funds for a visiting scholar program to invite senior minority scholars or professionals in whatever fields deemed appropriate to be in residence...2) that the College...includes minority scholars and public figures [in considering campus speakers for major lectures]...3) that given our proximity to Mexico and the increasing presence of Chicano culture in our own community, the college considers setting up exchange programs with an appropriate academic institution in Mexico City including exchanges among students and faculty." The letter also suggested possible speakers such as Manning Marable, Thomas Sowell, Donald Harris, Mario Barrera, Juan Gomez Quinones, Howard Stanback, Francisco Rivera-Batiz, William Darrity Jr., Angela Davis, Frank Knight, Mel King, Edwin Melendez, Gloria Josephs, Phyllis Wallace, Lourdes Benaria, Alice Walker, Al Young, Richard Rodriguez, Edward Rivera, Toni Morrison, Shirley Chisholm, Barbara Jordan, and Harry Bellafonte.
