Faculty Meeting Minutes, October 15th, 1980, pp. 2, 4, & 5

Description

The faculty debate a resolution involving the issue of Oxy's holdings in apartheid South Africa. The faculty are divided in this meeting. Some raise timing as an issue. The holdings of the Carnation Company proxy, which manages $750,000 in a special scholarship fund for "outstanding students" at Occidental without consideration of financial need, presents another dilemma: the significant financial benefits of doing business with apartheid South Africa. Professor Newhall passionately quotes Martin Luther King Jr. to offer a rebuttal to those who raise timing as a reason not to act: "Who are you to set a timetable for my freedom?" Professor Boesche followed suit and urged those present to "research" this issue and not have misinformation as an excuse not to act
